vosvo1Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies (SOSVA) has over the past 27 years worked relentlessly to strengthen the NGO sector, and to partner effectively with government, the civil society and with its donors, to address a spectrum of health, education and other developmental concerns, particularly those related to underprivileged and marginalized groups.

sosva logoVOLACT PROJECT
One of SOSVA’s most challenging initiative, has been the promotion of volunteerism through Volact – “The Center for Promotion of Voluntary Action”. Volact has over the years inspired a committed and sustainable approach to volunteerism working tirelessly to connect good people to good causes.
Since 1997 SOSVA has enrolled hundreds of highly motivated volunteers from various categories of individuals and placed them with NGOs operating in different areas of health, education, welfare of women’s and children, care of the aged, rehabilitation of the handicapped etc.

DHABON PROJECT
The Dhabon School was established to cater to the educational needs of Katakari Tribes who are a migrant community. The Dhabon School is a residential school and takes care of the children’s housing, educational and nutritional needs. The project was managed successfully for 4 years and is now running independently.

CHIRNER PROJECT
SOSVA initiated a rural Pathology Laboratory project at Chirner in Uran Taluka. Villagers no longer have to travel to Panvel or Mumbai for routine pathology tests.

MEDIGIFT PROJECT
Under the Indo-US bilateral agreement SOSVA received supplies of medicines from US donor agencies and distributed these through charitable & needy hospitals in India.17 shipments of supplies valued at Rs.27 crore benefiting 38 hospitals have so far been distributed. An outstanding contribution made by SOSVA was a timely help provided to hospitals at the time of the Latur earthquake, Tsunami, Mumbai flood & Gujarat earthquake.

SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAM
This has been implemented in three schools in Mumbai city. These schools cater to the educational needs of underprivileged children in their area.

PROJECT SHED
SHED operates in the large slum of Dharavi, Mumbai, and provides crèche facilities, day care facilities, health education and welfare service to children of this area.

SOSVA – FHI/ AIDS PROJECT
Aastha project in Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra as part of the India AIDS Initiative (Avahan) of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is run by FHI and SOSVA is a main implementing partner. The project aims to reduce the incidence of HIV / STIs among sex workers and their partners through strategic behavior change communications, condom provision and sexually transmitted infections services.sosva2

SOSVA – DFID TAST INNOVATION PROJECT
This project was undertaken to address socio – cultural constructs in the Transgender (TGs) Community and involve Gurus as health ambassadors to promote health seeking and reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS among the TGs in Mumbai.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
SOSVA supported SIES Indian Institute of Environmental Management (IIEM) for their research studies in utilization of fly – ash for improving yield of onions and grapes.

NGO – THEME TOUR
NGO – Theme Tours were designed to provide orientation to national and international participants on widely recognised development projects in India. In the field of health, participants get the opportunity to understand the inter-relatedness of health with our development program and innovative strategies being adopted to bring health for all.
This initiative is also extended to corporate bodies, group of individuals and students who wish to visit different development projects in the country.

MISSION JAL – SAVE WATER, SAFE WATER CAMPAIGN SOSVA and Tata Chemicals Limited have embarked on a mission to run a mass awareness campaign called “Mission Jal” mobilizing school children as the intermediaries of change.
The campaign was piloted in 10 English medium.10 sessions in each school were conducted by SOSVA volunteers who also gave their support and inputs in designing the module and the learning materials for the project.
